Nashi

Nashi are a pear that originated in Japan and Korea. They are not a cross between apples and pears as is often suggested. But, they are ready to eat like a pear but have the shape of an apple. They are crunchy, sweet and have a light crisp texture.

These are generally harvested from mid February to mid march.

Hosui: Is a medium to large golden to light brown fully russetted Asian pear.

Nijisseiki (or twentieth Century): Is green to yellow in colour. Is juicy with creamy white flesh and is the main nashi verity grown in Australia and seen through out much of Asia.

Cherries

Picking at Torrens Valley Orchards starts in early December and finishes in late January. We are particularly focused on growing firm, large sweet varieties suitable for the export markets.
Some of the principal varieties are:

Stella: A medium to large self-fertile heart shaped cherry. Very widely grown in South Australia and is consistently proving to be reliable producer.

Van: Medium to large, sweet, kidney shaped with a short stem

Sylvia: Is a new variety and similar in appearance to van. Originated from Summerland research centre (Canada) and proving to be very successful.

Simone: Introduced at the same time as Sylvia from Summerland. Is a larger, early flowering cherry that matures later in the season.

Sir Tom: Large, heart-shaped and very attractive new variety bred at Lenswood Research centre.

Sir Don: Medium to large cherry released with Sir Tom. It is a darker cherry, round, and consistently produces large marketable crops.

Sweetheart: This is a very late Summerland variety. It is red, very firm, and susceptible to cracking, excessive heat and over cropping.
